Case Study

Ministering to Millions

The largest church in the United States, Lakewood Church,, positively impacts the world by reaching millions of people in more than 150 nations from a spectacular self-contained campus. Its worldwide outreach center – a totally converted former civic sports arena — features a 16,000-seat sanctuary to accommodate 42,000+ weekly worshipers, as well as classrooms for a 5,000-strong children's ministry, support spaces for educational and community outreach, and a best-in-class media center to broadcast Pastor Joel Osteen's worldwide television ministry.

As overall project manager of more than 50 contractors and consultants who expended 1.5 million man-hours, Irvine Team transformed the former 400,000 square foot Houston Rockets basketball arena into a 600,00 square foot house of worship. Simultaneous with groundbreaking, Pastor Osteen authored a bestseller that resulted in explosive growth for the church and its ministries. Irvine Team met the challenges of re-scoping and re-quantifying the project at scheduled intervals to accommodate heightened, evolving needs within the original 17-month construction schedule. Unique procurement methodologies saved Lakewood millions of dollars while also protecting the integrity of the project and allowing for fund reallocations and significant enhancements.
